Unicorn.

Hey, you know what? There's a ton of lore on unicorns, too. In fact, I hear they ride on silver moonbeams and they shoot rainbows outta their ass!
~ Dante
...Wait, there's no such thing as unicorns?
~ Patty Lowell

A Unicorn is a mythological creature. Strong, wild, and impossible to be tamed by man. They are said to be the purest of creatures and to kill one is considered a heinous and immoral crime.

Overview[]

It was traditionally believed that a virgin who was naked sitting beneath a tree could only catch the delicate unicorn. The unicorn, who craves purity, would be irresistibly drawn to the girl and lie down with his head in her lap. While it slept, the hunter could capture it. If, however, the girl was merely pretending to be a virgin, the unicorn would tear her apart. This could explain why unicorns preferred a woman's touch, but the young ones were more trusting and do not mind men as much.

Unicorns are also so fleet of the hoof that they can rarely be caught by humans. They were also fast enough to outrun werewolves with absurd ease which is quite an amazing feat as werewolves are known to be extraordinarily fast. They are not aggressive without cause, but should be treated with great respect.

Throughout the stories of the unicorn, its horn, the alicorn, is said to have great medicinal powers. In Ctesias’ writings, the dust filed from the horn was supposed to protect against deadly diseases if mixed into a potion. Or, if one drank from the horn, they would be protected against any poison. They also change color with age. Often, a narwhal tusk was sold as an alicorn, and it was often ground up and used for its magical properties.

Description[]

A Roman naturalist records it as "a very ferocious beast, similar in the rest of its body to a horse, with the head of a deer, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar, a deep, bellowing voice, and a single white horn, two cubits in length, standing out in the middle of its forehead."

Unicorn foals were born pure gold in colour. They remained so until they were about two years old, at which time they turned silver in colour. At around four years old their horn grew in. They were fully grown at about seven years old, at which at this age they turned a shade of pure white that was so bright that it made freshly fallen snow looked grey in comparison. Their hooves were golden (remaining so from their gold stage, the first two years of their life), and their blood was silver-blue and shone under the moonlight. It was not mentioned how long a Unicorn can live for.

Both hunters and zoologists have generally disbelieved the existence of the unicorn. Yet there are animals bearing on their heads a bony protuberance more or less like a horn, which may have given rise to the story. The rhinoceros horn, as it is called, is such a protuberance, though it does not exceed a few inches in height, and is far from agreeing with the descriptions of the horn of the unicorn.
