Gashadokuro

In Japanese folklore, Gashadokuro, also known as Odokuro, are giant skeletons of varying sizes, some up to fifteen times taller than an average person.

Overview[]

The Gashadokuro are spirits that take the form of giant skeletons and are fifteen times larger than an average person, said to be created from the ghosts of the people who died in battle and were not buried. The peoples’ desire for vengeance causes the Gashadokuro to roam after midnight, grabbing lone travelers and biting off their heads to drink their spraying blood.

Description[]

There is a way to know of their approach, as the victim would hear the sound of loud ringing in the ear caused by the rattling of its teeth. Gashadokuro are sometimes brought to life by powerful necromancers to wreak havoc upon villages and mortal armies, as Takiyasha Hime did when she summoned a Gashadokuro to attack the Japanese city of Kyoto. During these attacks, Gashadokuro will display a number of frightening abilities they use to hunt down wandering travelers.

The Gashadokuro are said to possess the powers of invisibility and indestructibility since it is composed of the bones of people who are already deceased, though Shinto charms are said to ward them off. Otherwise, a Gashadokuro will continue hunting its prey until its pent up anger is released, causing the bones to crumple and the Gashadokuro to collapse. An approaching Gashadokuro can be identified by the rattling of its teeth and skeletal structure. Sometimes, when a human has managed to evade a Gashadokuro and hide from it, the Gashadokuro will emit a loud and intimidating rattle from its bones in attempt to scare the human from out of hiding.
