For eons I have followed my Father's orders. Always doing what He says without question because I believed that His actions had meaning as they always have. Throughout the centuries that have passed I was so focused on being the one good son He would be proud of that I have forgotten to think for myself. And the fear of this made me believe that I will end up like my brother. But now...now I understand. It is time for me to be who I am, rather than who I am supposed to be.
~ Michael

Make no mistake this is not an act of rebellion against the word of our Father. The mortals have proven to be more than capable of oppressing the evils that were thrown against them. They may be frail, petty, and weak in flesh but they are strong in mind and spirit. And to sit idly by whilst they suffer and struggle at the growing tides of Hell is intolerable! We swore to our Father to shepard these humans to Paradise! To protect them from the Serpent's temptations! We will uphold the oath! For they have fought the legions of Hell with our names as their sword and shield! Like it or not they have aided us, and it is time we return the favor. Even if that should require violating our own statutes, to allow such a debt to go unpaid would bring eternal shame upon Heaven!
~ Michael

Michael, also known as Michael Demiurgos, is an archangel and the eldest child of God and Asherah. He is viewed as the field commander of the Heavenly Host and the strongest archangel in all of Heaven and creation. He is also the twin brother of Lucifer.

Overview

Michael is one of the first archangels in existence, and being one of the oldest angels, he is also the most powerful of them all only rivaled by Lucifer, Satan and Metatron. Michael's authority over the angels is strong and firm, with many angels holding him in high regard and great respect.

Michael's status in the army of Heaven is seen as a Viceroy or an Archistrage as well, but he's mostly seen as the commander of Heaven's army. He is also a saint and thus carries the title "St. Michael The Archangel." His name also means "Who is like God" which is more of a question than a statement as it establishes that there are none like God.

History

Genesis

Michael was created at the same time as Lucifer, being among the first creations of God with Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel in tow. Michael and his siblings aided their parents in defeating Azathoth and the Ogdru Jahad, with Michael and Lucifer both engaged in fierce combat against Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos and the Messenger of the Ogdru Jahad.

Upon defeating Nyarlathotep and several Ogdru Jahad, God personally chained Azathoth as the Great Beast fell into a deep slumber with the archangels casting the Ogdru Jahad into the Outerverse. However, Michael noticed that the Ogdru Jahad spawned children known as the Ogdru Hem and were then tasked by Asherah to find them and destroy them, later receiving aid from the deities of mythology.

Time in Heaven

Being the oldest he was also the responsible and more mature of his siblings and is always taking care of them, especially Lucifer. Michael, in some way, was a voice of reason for Lucifer whenever the Morningstar expressed his obvious displeasure and frustration towards their Father. Moreover, whereas Lucifer was proud of his beauty and power, Michael was unconcerned with his own, only focusing on protecting and guiding his siblings. He would oversee his fellow angels aid in the development of the universe as well as the newly created Earth that would come to be the gift for his Father's greatest creations.

The creations in question were Man. Michael was among the archangels that witnessed God's creation of Adam and Lilith. God would proclaim their perfection as they were created in His image, and Michael was one of the angels that bowed down to them by order of their Father. Not long after their creation, Michael stood up to Samael, the Arbiter of God, who was vehemently against subservience to the humans as they will bring nothing but ruin and death, enraged at the thought of them being in the likeness of God. Michael was one of the angels that cast out Samael from the Holy Mountain. He also began to notice Lucifer's rebellious nature and his growing resentment towards God during their songs.

War in Heaven

It soon escalated to Lucifer rebelling against the system of Heaven and God's way of ruling the cosmos with Michael standing against his brother. Before this, however, Lucifer would confide in Michael regarding his increasing disdain towards their Father's methods and was especially enraged towards the fact that God would have dominion over one's fate in life. This was an afford to Lucifer's entire being as he embodies free-will. Michael attempted to reason with Lucifer, stating that God has plans for everyone and He is not one to manipulate but to guide but this was not enough for Lucifer. To ease his brother's worries, Michael traversed towards the Empyrean to discuss the subject, only to discover from his Father that Lucifer is fated to be slain by Michael's own hand. Distraught, Michael quickly left and attempted to process what he just learned from his Father.

Deep in his thought, Michael was approached by Lucifer who questioned him on what he learned. A brief thought of shadowing the truth passed him but he could not bring himself to lie to his brother, especially since the very concept of lying was abhorrent to him. Michael revealed to the truth to Lucifer and the Morningstar was understandably shocked, horrified, but more-so enraged. Michael pleaded with Lucifer to listen but Lucifer left in anguish and anger. Not long after, Michael was among the first to notice an armada of rebel angels descending upon crystal kingdom of God like a raging tempest. He quickly gathered his own forces as he leads God's armies against Lucifer's forces during his uprising.

Michael discovered that Lucifer was the cause behind the uprising during their confrontation within the Empyrean. Michael had three attempts of desperate pleas to have his brother stop this madness but all were in vain. The third was what removed any hope of reasoning when Michael struck Lucifer with a savage blow that left a scar across his face and chest. Eventually, Samael joined the battle against Michael. He fought both Lucifer and Samael with the latter assuming the form of a Great Red Dragon and used as Lucifer's steed. Michael received aid from Merkabah and was able to overwhelm and defeat the two archangels before banishing them and their rebel cohorts to Hell.

Rampage of the Scarlet King

After the War in Heaven and Lucifer's fall from grace, Michael's character changed. The horrors he had witnessed and partook in overcoming such horrors had an effect on his mentality. He grew stern, cold, authoritative, and he no longer smiled. It is also said that upon witnessing Hell's formation for the first time, Michael shed tears at what was wrought from what was meant to be an age of peace and light. After the fall of Adam and Eve, Michael was the one who escorted the two humans out of Eden alongside Uriel with the latter then guarding the main gate to the Garden of Eden and preventing any from entering again. However, after their expulsion, Michael showed Adam a vision of future events that will transpire due to the consequences of their actions. The tainting of their soul and spirit shall spread far and wide amongst their descendants and kin, like a shadow of sin and evil.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst in Heaven once again as the atrocities in the Heavenly War came back to haunt Michael and his family. Michael was notified and tasked with defeating the being known as the Scarlet King who was originally one of the Sentinels of Creatio, guardians of light that guard the Tree of Life and tend to the gardens of Asherah, the mother of the angels. The Scarlet King's madness emerged due to Lucifer's war in Heaven dramatically shifting the nature of existence and had him exposed to it in its entirety. After killing and consuming most of his siblings, the Fallen Sentinel turned his attention to the Tree of Life only to engage in a ferocious battle against Michael with the archangel emerging victorious. He then had the Seven Archangels use the spears of the Sentinels to incapacitate the Scarlet King before imprisoning him.

Imprisoning the Watchers

Before the Great Flood, Michael and his archangel brethren saw the spread of corruption, evil, and sin from the actions of the Grigori, a host of angels that were tasked to watch over the development of humanity but never interfere, who end up lusting after the mortal women and conceived powerful but monstrous children known as the Nephilim. Michael was personally tasked by God to subdue the leader of the Watchers, Samyaza, and imprison the other rebellious Watchers with Raphael personally defeating and imprisoning Azazel in Dudael alongside the other Watchers for eternity.

Evil was its height during this crisis as Michael would lead a band of angels to vanquish this evil either by God's command or by the prayers of the righteous who remained pure even amongst this sea of malevolence. After the Flood, demons from the Inferno would make their way towards Earth but in an incorporeal form, instead taking residence within the mortal bodies of humans. Michael would be conjured by priests to engage in a spiritual battle against the demons with the great archangel's presence alone being more than enough to have the demons cower and flee in terror from him. Michael began to notice that the demons were growing more bold as well, all in part to Mundus, the child of Lucifer and Lilith. Mundus was able to enter the mortal plane and lead the humans astray from their faiths, tempting and corrupting them into adopting more abhorrent forms of worship, in this case the worship of Mundus, and build effigies and monuments that will help the demons crossover to the human world more effectively. Michael had his angels destroy these unholy monuments with the greatest among them being the Tower of Babel.

Later on, Michael was informed by Metatron that these surges of demonic attacks were the works of Lucifer finding ways to move around God's schematics of keeping the infernal inhabitants at bay from His flock. Thus, they opted to truly imprison Lucifer as the effects of his exploits on Earth would be reduced. As Lucifer laid upon the peak of Niphates, observing the nighttime sky in contemplation and deep thought, Lailah, the archangel of night, had constellations "sing with their illuminative fire" as she danced across the stars, which became a powerful spell that entranced Lucifer to a deep sleep. Immediately, Michael appeared before the slumbering Morningstar, restrained him with Judecca chains, and finally have him confined and imprisoned within a Great Tomb created by Jophiel. They took further precautions by have it be locked with mystical seals that can only be broken through prophesied occurrences.

Biblical Exploits

Michael acted as the advocate of Israel, and sometimes had to fight with the princes of the other nations and particularly with Samael, Israel's accuser. Michael's enmity against Samael dates from the time when the latter was thrown down from Heaven. Samael took hold of the wings of Michael, whom he wished to bring down with him in his fall; but Michael was saved by God. Michael said, "May The Lord rebuke you" to Satan for attempting to claim the body of Moses. In the Book of Daniel, Michael appears as "one of the chief princes" who in Daniel's vision comes to Gabriel's aid in his contest with the prince of Persia.

The rabbis declare that Michael entered upon his role of defender at the time of the biblical patriarchs. Rabbi Eliezer ben Jacob said that Michael rescued Abraham from the furnace into which he had been thrown by Nimrod. It is claimed that it was Michael, the "one that had escaped" (Genesis 14:13), who told Abraham that Lot had been taken captive, and who protected Sarah from being defiled by Abimelech.

It is also said that Michael prevented Isaac from being sacrificed by his father by substituting a ram in his place. He saved Jacob, while yet in his mother's womb, from being killed by Samael. Later Michael prevented Laban from harming Jacob and is also said to have destroyed the army of Sennacherib.

Personality

As the general and prince of the Heavenly Host, as well as being God's greatest soldier, Michael is seen as an archangel with a strong sense of justice, honor, empathy, honesty, patriotism, and innate selfless benevolence. He is a firm, strong, but powerful leader, regarded as the embodiment of conviction and follows the laws and regulations of Heaven and his Father to the letter while expecting others to do the same. Regardless, Michael cares deeply for his siblings even though he does not show it, prompting Gabriel to say that Michael has a "typical uptight big brother way" of showing that he cares.

Some angels fear Michael due to his status and authority, however, when he detects this he states that it is not he that they should fear, but God, being clear that he is not exactly fond of being looked at with fear. He is not one to tolerate insubordination, and is vocal with those who attempt to act in such a manner. He lacks a sense of humor and thus never smiles. He is quick to anger in the face of possible betrayal and can be quite aggressive in combat. Uriel explains that this is due to the fact that Lucifer, his own brother, betrayed their Father and their family, and this left Michael scarred and possibly paranoid.

Michael's relationship with humans is rather complicated at best. While he does not hate them like Lucifer does, he does view them as inferior and will not hesitate to be cruel towards them in the face of disrespect. Unlike his brother Gabriel, Michael will only defend the humans and the Earth itself if God commands him to do so. But as time goes by, and throughout his perilous tales with his siblings and growing development as a character, he becomes less critical and stern to them, showing genuine concern for their well-being, especially towards the innocents who suffer at the hands of wicked and malignant beings. This did not affect Michael's view on evil in any way, as he can still be exceptionally ruthless and brutal in combat against malevolent forces and people. After the Grigori Invasion and the Scarlet King's release, Michael spent time on Earth and was rather socially awkward around mortals. Metaphors and figures of speeches fly over his head and would take them as literal sometimes, resulting in Gabriel needing to guide him, as well as humorous and awkward situations. He even finds gestures of affection and comfort like hugs to be odd and is unknowing of how to respond in kind. Ironically, this also made him humble and generous towards humans and his characteristics are even found to be attractive by others.

He keeps his emotions at bay and never allows them to stand in the way of his judgement, however, there have been rare occasions where Michael would hide from the others and silently weep in frustration from all the calamities that transpired in Heaven, especially with him having to always step in and stop the madness by slaying or imprisoning those whom he once called brother/sister. While he may seem steadfast and serious on the outside, Michael is very depressed from what occurred with the War in Heaven, banishing his brother, and his Mother leaving Heaven and never returning. Far later on in the story, Michael has become noticeably more somber and sullen, though he retains much of his old personality but is more lighthearted and kind. His care for his family is made clear when he cries upon speaking about the deaths of some of his siblings, his Father gone, and his Mother missing. He also seems to have gained a new perspective on why he had prevailed over the countless enemies he faced, as rather than saying it was due to his immense power and prowess as a warrior, Michael somewhat humbly said to Jöris that he believed he is only alive because fate wants it. This development is how Michael had been internally feeling for eons, as he even once lashed out by repeatedly punching the ground releasing all his pent-up anger and emotions.

Despite this, Michael is a heroic celestial being as his indomitable willpower, lawfully absolute loyalty and refusal to give up even under seemingly insurmountable odds (most notably when he faced the combined might of Lucifer and Satan, then later beings such as the Scarlet King, or Nyarlathotep, without hesitation, persisting against them until he finally gained the upper hand) that allows people such as Dante or Vergil to trust the archangel, and respect him as an ally. Due to eons of experience, Michael very rarely shows any sign of distress or surprise, usually responding by his eyes widening an inch or two, which, along with his facial expression, exhibit a fiercely stern demeanor.

He is impeccably loyal to his father, and takes his duties with utmost seriousness, expecting the same from the angels and his brothers. His loyalty is so great, that he is willing to sacrifice himself in order to defeat his brother Lucifer or Satan, believing it to be his destiny, that was written down by God, to lay down his life for the sake of creation. Dante describes Michael as a "daddy's boy" seeing as how he is willing to do anything to please his father and goes on to say that in contrast Lucifer is more of a "momma's boy" since he relishes in being spoiled by Asherah, their mother.

Powers and Abilities

As one of the first archangels created, Michael is a supremely powerful celestial being, and the only angel that is able to best Lucifer and cast him into Hell. He is even strong enough to match and overpower Satan in a fight, subdue Samyaza, imprison the Grigori within the deepest chasms of the Earth, bring down the Hindu goddess Kali when she was on another rampage across creation, and even managing to harm Azathoth alongside Lucifer. During the Apocalypse, Dantalion proclaimed that the archangel's might was so vast, many believe that no one in Heaven or Hell, aside from Lucifer, has come close to matching him. Michael himself states that the reason no one has taken the occupation of Viceroy of Heaven is because no angel had been born to match him in power. However, Satan was able to best him during the climax of the Apocalypse but this was mostly due to the fact that he absorbed Lucifer's restored angelic grace along with the enhancement given by the Forbidden Fruit and the fact that Michael was exhausted from his fight with Lucifer.

Despite his enormous power, he has been beaten on very rare occasions, but he was still powerful enough to defeat and imprison many of the Ogdru Hem, with many of the Ogdru Jahad rivaling or surpassing him in power. Michael has also managed to put up a good fight against Nyarlathotep for an extended period of time before Lucifer joined the battle. Michael was also the only angel at the time who was powerful enough to stop the Scarlet King when he first began his conquest and destruction of existence although he required aid from a powerful Lance that was granted to him by God to put down the corrupted Sentinel. Even after many eons, the Scarlet King found himself struggling against Michael in their second battle though the archangel was eventually overwhelmed. Michael was shown to be able to destroy entities made of pure nothingness from Pralaya with these entities being able to literally devour reality itself like a swarm of locusts.

Lucifer himself stated, albeit in a tone of bitterness and respect, that Michael was the only angel in all of Heaven that was strong enough to defeat him and that should they ever decide to battle on Earth like they did in Heaven, their fight alone would reduce the planet to cinders. Lucifer also admitted that the fight against the other archangels that attempted to stop him, after taking him to the planet Jupiter to avoid collateral damage, is minuscule compared to his fight against Michael. Even the ever confident Dante stated that he is unsure if he would be able to walk away from a fight against the archangel even after he unlocked his full and true hidden demonic power from devouring the Rebis fruit.
