Well, you could say that I'm a bit of a miracle worker myself. I gave a man a new limb after he lost it during that ongoing conflict over Israel. He would've been a cripple for the rest of his life, but I decided otherwise. No prosthetics needed here, but if you'd prefer one, I won't judge you for it.
~ Raphael.

Raphael, whose name means "God Heals" or "One that heals.", is one of the first five Archangels, the original and mightiest angels in all of Heaven. Raphael is the fourth oldest of the five archangels, a powerful healer, guardian angel, and a mighty fighter of demons next to Michael himself.

Overview[]

Saint Raphael is accounted patron of travelers, the blind, happy meetings, lovers, nurses, physicians, medical workers, matchmakers, Christian marriage, and Catholic studies. He is said to be the guardian of the Tree of Life, the opposite of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. He also expounds to Adam the War in Heaven in which Lucifer and the demons fell, and the creation of the Earth.

In Christianity, Raphael is generally associated with an unnamed angel mentioned in the Gospel of John, who stirs the water at the healing pool of Bethesda. Raphael is recognized as an angel in the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as he is briefly mentioned in the Doctrine and Covenants. Raphael is mentioned in the Book of Tobit, which is accepted as canonical by Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and some Anglicans.

History[]

Genesis[]

Raphael was created after Lucifer, Michael, and Gabriel making him the fourth oldest of the archangels. He was present during the battle between his Father and Azathoth and aided his siblings in their own battles against the Ogdru Jahad. His incredible powers of healing surfaced when he healed his siblings from receiving an injury. After successfully defeating the Ogdru Jahad, Raphael and his siblings went on to stabilize the newly created universe before helping further in its creation.

Not much is known of what Raphael did after the completion of the universe. What is known, however, is that during the war in Heaven, Raphael was amongst the leading forces of the Heavenly Host against Lucifer's rebellious faction. Raphael acted as a medic during the war, healing and sending out other medical angels to tend to the wounded. It was not long until he engaged against the fallen Cherub, Asmodeus. Raphael's victory over the former Cherub garnered a fiercely antagonistic relationship between the archangel and fallen angel.

Imprisonment of Azazel[]

After the creation of the Nephilim due to the lustful actions of the Watchers when they mated with human women, Raphael was amongst the archangels tasked by God to deal with this situation. During that time, Azazel, one of the chiefs of the Watchers, taught the humans how to fight and how to use weapons against one another.

Raphael was tasked to deal with Azazel himself and the archangel descends down from the Heavens, quickly subduing the contemptuous Watcher angel. Raphael bound Azazel's hands and feet, before opening a fissure in the desert which leads to Dudael and tosses him inside, again binding him against a set of jagged pointy rocks whilst also covering his face so that he might never see the light again.

Aiding Tobias[]

Raphael first appears disguised in human form as the traveling companion of Tobit's son Tobias, calling himself "Azariah the son of the great Ananias". Azariah, or Raphael, agrees to help Tobias on his journey, promising to keep him safe and to ensure his quest of reclaiming his father's money is completed. At that time, Raphael is aware of Asmodeus's machinations in preventing Sarah from consummating with her would-be suitors in order for the demon to have her for himself.

Meanwhile, on the road, Tobias and Azariah settle down to camp where Tobias is attacked by a monstrous fish that leaps from the river to devour the man. Azariah manages to save Tobias, before snatching the fish out of the water and tells Tobias to gut it. The innards of the fish are removed, and Azariah tells Tobias that one may use these parts of the fish for healing the sick and wounded although Tobias does not appear to fully grasp the notion of this.

Battle Against Asmodeus[]

Tobias and Azariah arrive at Rageul's home who is a kinsman of one of the tribes of Israel and an ally according to Azariah. Rageul is also the father of the cursed Sarah and it was there that Azariah tells Tobias that he should marry Sarah to which he agrees despite the curse that was placed on her by Asmodeus. Seeing that he was reluctant, Azariah tells Tobias and Sarah to pray three days before consummating on their marriage. He tells them that on the first day he should lay the liver of the fish on the fire which will repel Asmodeus and that by the third night he will receive a blessing that will see him impregnate Sarah. And then on the fourth day, he will give her a child but not out of lust, rather love.

Tobias then took out the fish liver, burning it on a set of coals which prevents Asmodeus from coming near the newly weds. Moreover, at the same time, Azariah reveals himself as the archangel Raphael, who sought out the mighty demon king and defeated him after a lengthy battle. Raphael took the defeated Asmodeus to the desert of Upper Egypt and bound him there on a rock surrounded by water, completely cutting him off from ever laying his hands on Sarah and her offspring.

Later, as they return home, Azariah tells Tobias to kiss his father and use the innards of the fish he killed upon his father's forehead resulting in Tobit recovering his eyesight. When Tobias offers Azariah everything that Sarah's father gifted him, Azariah revealed his true form as Raphael, deeply frightening Tobias and Tobi, and tells them that he was sent by God to help them. He gives them God's blessing before vanishing and returning to Heaven.

Other Biblical Exploits[]

It is believed that the pool known as Bethesda which lay in Jerusalem is acquainted with the archangel Raphael. There, surrounding the pool, are disabled or sick individuals of all sorts and it is said that when anyone of these individuals submerge themselves in the pool, they are miraculously healed of all their ailments regardless of how severe it is.

Raphael also appears before Abraham at the Oak Grove of Mamre alongside Michael and Gabriel. Raphael was ordered to heal Abraham after his recent circumcision as well as to save Lot from the destruction of Sodom.

Personality[]

Raphael can be described as serene and apathetic towards others. While aggressive in battle, he is calm when not and has a cool gaze constantly. He generally acts indifferent to most situations he is faced with, and rarely views his opponent as worth his time. However, he has a great sense of duty and honor, and rarely shows signs of panic or distress. He also, despite his seemingly cold exterior, cares for and loves his family deeply.

In fact, Raphael was completely different before the War in Heaven in that he was more affectionate, care-free, and gentle. Raphael's relationship with humans, similarly to Michael, is slightly complicated. He does not hate them like Lucifer but does view them as inferior nonetheless, however, this does not mean he is indifferent towards their suffering and will answer their prayers. He will even go so far as to help heal one that is not human such as when he healed Derous after the dragon was at death's door from using the Dragon Install to its fullest potential.

The only time when Raphael loses his cool is when faced with Lucifer. He deeply despises most demons, and hates his brother for the torment he put him and his family through during and after the war. He becomes visibly enraged at the mere words that Lucifer spits and will immediately attack without a second thought. After the invasion of the Grigori along with Azathoth's release and Pralaya's defeat, Raphael eventually forgave Lucifer and the two brothers reconciled once more.

Powers and Abilities[]

As an archangel, especially among the first five created by God and Asherah, Raphael is an extremely powerful being. Despite being the fourth youngest of the five archangels he is still a very formidable fighter. Though he is a gifted healer, Raphael is a powerful warrior, nearly equaling Lucifer and Michael in terms of brute strength and power. Raphael was shown to engage against the Ogdru Jahad during the conflict between his Father and Azathoth and was also able to destroy a few of the Ogdru Hem, giving chase to the Old Ones as they attempted to escape the wrath of the Almighty.

During the War in Heaven, Raphael did not engage much against the rebel angels as it goes against his role as a healer but was forced to comply due to the initial overwhelming odds of Lucifer's forces pushing back against the Heavenly Host. Raphael was not only able to easily repel many of Lucifer's forces he was also capable of engaging against Asmodeus himself who was one of the princes of the Cherubim and emerged victorious in their battle. Despite Asmodeus becoming one of the original kings of Hell, Raphael stroke great fear into him and his mere reputation was enough for Asmodeus' legions to flee. When he appeared before Immanuel and Vergil along with the latter's demonic posse, Sitri tensed greatly and believed that the archangel's might was greater than all of them combined.

While being a mighty warrior, Raphael is highly proficient in conventional healing techniques and herbal healing. His knowledge of anatomy is great enough that upon examination of Lucifer's "dead body", he concluded it was not Lucifer or even real. When Raphael heals a condition, often the cure manifests instantly. When being healed, people feel a gentle buzzing energy as Raphael is healing them; or they see green lights. But for others, Raphael’s healing is very subtle. Raphael can help one reduce or eliminate pain stemming from short-term and chronic conditions. However this is only a result of one asking for his help. In this way, they signal their permission for him to intervene.
